Congratulations to Ecofish Water Resources Engineer, Dr. Abul Baki who has been awarded the prestigious 2018 Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize for his paper “Flow Structures in the Vicinity of a Submerged Boulder within a Boulder Array,” published in May of 2017. This Prize is awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineer’s (ASCE) Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, to the “paper which is judged to be of superior merit, dealing with a problem of flowing water, either in theory or practice.” Dr. Baki’s paper beat out over 100 other submissions, a huge accomplishment acknowledged by the ASCE, a society representing more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries.
The purpose of Dr. Baki’s study was to provide detailed measurements of flow around a single boulder located in a stream bed with a high concentration of boulders. It is hoped that the results around fish habitat structures in this study will aid in making potential improvements in the design of nature-like fish passes and river restoration projects (e.g., habitat restoration, enhancement, or replacement.) This paper was written in collaboration with Dr. Wenming Zhang, Dr. David Z. Zhu, and Dr. Nallamuthu Rajaratnamat at the University of Alberta.
